An ex-employee of Sacred Heart University facing sex crime charges called himself “an evil of the world” in a pre-written apology note found by investigators after he was arrested by an undercover cop posing as a 14-year-old girl last week.

Matthew Janik, 39, was arrested on Dec. 30 on felony charges of enticing a minor by computer, attempted second-degree sexual assault of a minor, attempted illegal sexual contact with a minor, and attempted commercial sex abuse of a minor, the Connecticut Post reported.

A Bloomfield police officer pretending to be a 14-year-old girl online struck up a conversation with Janik on Dec. 24 through the website Chatib, according to a police report obtained by the local outlet.

Janik allegedly talked about wanting to have sex and set up a late-night meeting at a McDonald’s in Bloomfield, Conn. with the person he believed was a minor on Dec. 30, police said in the report.

Instead, detectives were waiting near the McDonald’s for Janik and arrested him upon arrival.

Officers found a laptop, cellphone, and a receipt for condoms purchased that night while searching his vehicle, police said. A pre-written apology was discovered on the laptop — addressed to the family of the nonexistent girl who Janik thought he was meeting.

“Matthew explained [in the apology] that no one deserves to worry about their child on any night and that in this instance, he turned into something to worry about,” the report said.

He also called himself “an evil of the world” in the apology note, according to police.

SHU suspended Janik following his arrest. He had served as the associate director of athletics communications at the university since December 2022, according to his since-deleted profile on the school’s website.

Janik admitted to driving to Bloomfield with the intention of having sex with the person he thought was a 14-year-old girl during an interview at the police station, police said. He had also sent photos of himself in his underwear to the undercover officer, according to the report.

“Matthew claimed that he acted out of character today because he is bored and lonely, and not feeling fulfilled with his work,” the police report read.

However, Janik also confessed to having spoken with a staggering 50 girls who all claimed to be under the age of 18, police said.

He allegedly admitted that he had received nude photos from the girls, including at least a dozen from girls as young as 11 and 12 years old. He claimed that he hadn’t saved any of the photos, according to the report.

The disgraced athletics employee reportedly told police that he had been focusing on girls primarily between the ages of 14 and 20 years old for about a decade.

Janik had previously met in person with people he was chatting with online, including a woman in her 20s and a 16-year-old while he was still living in New Hampshire years ago, police said.

Janik was being held in lieu of $250,000 bail and was scheduled to appear Monday at Superior Court in Hartford, Conn.
